If you are traveling far from Tokyo, such as from Kyoto, Osaka or Hiroshima, and don’t have a Japan Rail Pass then it’s best to take the bus. Prices are dramatically cheaper than the Shinkansen (bullet train).

The biggest bus company, often with the best prices. As the website is only in Japanese, it’s best to reserve at a main JR (national rail) station such as Kyoto or Osaka or ask you hostel/hotel to reserve it.
